The Friday Five: Davos

In a new series brought to you every Friday, Narrative Matters curates the very best examples of storytelling from across the planet giving you insight, advice, ideas and, above all, inspiration for your sustainability-related content communications.

This week: Davos 2016

Great examples of pinning content and comms around the annual shindig for the world’s one-percenters (as overviewed here).

1. The Circulars

Edinburgh-based private equity firm Circularity Capital were up for Circulars trophy

As far as sustainability-based awards schemes go, The Circular Economy Awards – or Circulars as they so desperately demand be called – are great. Backed by Accenture and the Forum of Young Global Leaders (and championed so irrepressibly by 2degrees’ Ollie Hurrey), the eight categories showcase the corporates, start-ups and people behind the very best examples of how a circular economy can work. And they use a shiny platform at Davos to announce the winners. See who picked up a trophy in the snowy town this time around, here.

2. The world’s 100 ‘most sustainable corporations’

Ranked top: Biogen Idec

Ranked top: Biogen Idec

The US biotech firm, Biogen Idec, has topped this year’s Global 100 index, the data-driven ranking issued each year by the Canada-based Corporate Knights (with a little help from Solactive). As with any ranking, one ought to tread carefully in making any sort of judgement. But this one is based on publicly-disclosed info and then evaluated across 12 KPIs that measure how well each firm manages resources, staff and their finances.

3. The RobecoSAM yearbook

ICT: Most improved

ICT: Most improved

And why wouldn’t the team from RobecoSAM be in Davos? The investment specialist used the Swiss get-together to launch The Sustainability Yearbook 2016 which looks specifically at the sustainability performance of certain industries during the last 12 months, awarding the best 15% of companies in each sector a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal. The results – including the fact that ICT sector has upped its game more than any other – make for interesting lunch-break reading.

4. The PwC CEO survey

Terrorism: among the issues keeping CEOs awake at night

Terrorism: among the issues keeping CEOs awake at night

Apparently, the confidence levels of global CEOs are at their lowest ebb than at any other time in the last three years. That is what PwC’s 19th annual Global CEO Survey, published at the same time business leaders hopped out of their private jets in Davos. Terrorism, Middle Eastern conflict, the price of crude oil and China’s recent economy rebalancing are just some of the things keeping many of the 1,400 CEOs surveyed awake at night.

5. And the best country to live in is…

No.1. But where is it?

No.1. But where is it?

Yes, another ranking; this time of countries, rather than companies. Devised by BAV Consulting, with the support of U.S. News & World Report and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, you’ll never guess what The Best Countries report has at No.1…
